Our Community's Greatest Asset: People
The Access Community Capital Loan Fund is possible because of the support of private citizens and organizations that have invested their own money in ACCESS for one to three years. In exchange, investors receive a competetive interest rate. All investors are required to read and sign a disclosure document.
Money invested in ACCESS guarantees start-up and expansion loans for viable local businesses. The following features of the fund ensure responsible loan repayment:
- Alterna Savings administers the loans
- Initial loans are under $5000 and are payable within eighteen months
- Candidates endure a rigorous screening process involving experienced business people and financial loan officers
- A loan loss reserve equal to at least 20% of the amount on the loan is used to cover loan defaults
- Regular contact is made with clients to identify and resolve repayment challenges
- Borrowers receive mentoring from Loan Review Committee members every four months to assist them in growing their business
Investors in ACCESS Community Capital Fund can expect returns that exceed the initial investment. In addition to creating a healthier community, investors:
- Avoid high investment fees and a volatile market
- Know how their money is being used wisely
- Choose among three investment horizons
- Enhance the vibrant small business sector that keeps our neighborhoods unique, attractive and safe

Donating vs. Investing
- Donations go toward our operating and program expenses, including reaching out to new clients and new neighborhoods, and providing pre- and post-loan mentorship and support of our loan clients. Donors receive a tax receipt.
- Investments go towards our loan fund and can be withdrawn at the end of the term. Investors earn a return.
